What lighting should I use in a bathroom?
Choosing the right lighting for your bathroom can be a challenging task. In addition to aesthetics and functionality, you also need to consider safety, especially due to the moist conditions. Therefore, you should pay attention to the correct IP code.
What is an IP code?
The IP rating indicates at what level an electrical device is protected against ingress of water and dust. This code will be followed by two numbers.
Zones in the bathroom
Depending on the zone in the bathroom, a specific IP code applies.
- Zone 0: This is the inside of the bathtub or shower tray. Lighting in this zone must be completely waterproof and operate at very low voltage (maximum 12V). The minimum IP code for this zone is IP67.
- Zone 1: This is the area directly above the bathtub or shower tray, up to a height of 2.25 meters from the floor. Lighting in this zone must be protected against strong water jets. The minimum IP code is IP65.
- Zone 2: This is the area that extends 60 cm outside the boundaries of zone 1 and up to a height of 2.25 meters from the floor. Lighting in this zone must be protected against splashing water. The minimum IP code is IP44.
- Outside the zones: Areas further than 60 cm from zone 2 and higher than 2.25 meters are considered less critical. Here, lighting with an IP20 code is usually sufficient, unless there are specific risks.

What should you avoid placing in a bathroom in terms of lighting
- No pendant lights in damp areas: Avoid using pendant lights above bathtubs or showers in Belgium (and in many other countries) for safety reasons. Dripping water vapor can cause a short circuit and result in electric shocks.
- No non-waterproof fixtures: Do not install lighting without a suitable IP rating for the specific area. For areas close to water sources such as bathtubs, showers, and sinks, a minimum of IP44 is required to ensure protection against splashing water.
- No oversized fixtures in small bathrooms: Consider the dimensions of fixtures in proportion to the size of the bathroom. Oversized fixtures can be overwhelming and take up valuable space.
Tips for choosing the right lighting
Dimmable lighting: Consider dimmable lighting for a relaxing atmosphere. Check if the dimmer is suitable for the type of lamp you choose.
- LED lighting: LED lamps are energy-efficient and have a long lifespan. They are available in different color temperatures, from warm white to cool white.
- Natural colors: Choose lighting that reproduces natural colors (CRI 90 or higher) for a realistic representation of skin tones and makeup.
- Mirrors with lighting: Consider mirrors with integrated lighting for added functionality and a modern look.
Choosing the right lighting for your bathroom requires attention to both style and safety. By choosing the right IP codes for the different zones in your bathroom, you ensure that your lighting is resistant to moisture and safe to use. With the right lighting, you can not only improve functionality but also create a cozy and relaxing environment.
