Wall Washing Lighting | What Is It?
Wallwashing is a lighting technique that illuminates a wall as evenly as possible. Instead of creating separate pools of light, it produces a calm, uniform surface of light that enhances both the wall and the overall perception of the space.
Wallwashing can be particularly effective in a living room, entrance hall, hallway or any space with an important architectural wall. Artwork, curtains and distinctive materials can also be enhanced through carefully planned light distribution.
The effect depends greatly on the luminaires used and their positioning. The distance from the wall, spacing between luminaires, ceiling height and light distribution all determine how uniform the result will be. Simply placing a standard spotlight near a wall does not automatically create a good wallwashing effect.
Wallwashing can also make a room feel more spacious. By illuminating vertical surfaces instead of focusing only on the floor, the architecture becomes more visible and the space gains greater depth.
